latest update

Well its been a while since my last post, so i thought while the markets are doing nothing that id write one.

As I type this im sitting a half hour train ride out of London in Surrey, on a futures trading floor. Having part quit, part been fired from my hedge fund role (its true, i was the SocGen accomplice) last October, i’ve taken on a trading graduate program with a new firm. Having always wanted to find a trading job, despite the almost complete lack of initial salary i decided to take it on.

Initially we had a 6 week training course, followed by time on the stock market simulator. I didn’t really learn much from this first course, as some of it was pretty basic but for people who maybe hadn’t been in finance before. The next step is being backed by the firm to trade stock market futures (ill be trading the FTSE – UK market). Its a very different world from the long-term type 3 to 5 year outlook that im used to, where trades are put on for (sometimes) a matter of seconds. The last 3 months have been particularly volatile, and a baptism of fire – although we haven’t been using real money yet. In the end its almost like playing a computer game everyday, except with the potential to make money (or lose!) at the end of it.

Its been a full-on past 6 months, with early starts and not much time to do anything else, which has been a complete contrast to the prior 6 months. Over Sep / Oct took a long trip thru South of France for Rugby World Cup, whilst seeing Aus v Fiji in Montpellier, snuck in a work conference in Geneva, before heading off to Ibiza for 5 days then rounding it all of with a few days in Munich at Oktoberfest and finally Stockholm.

Looking to this summer I don’t really know what im going to be able to do, a) because im flat broke! And b) we’re supposed to be slaving away for the first year in this role. Im going to have to find a way around that though, with a lot of euro places i still want to see and the huge number of festivals that seem to be happening.

Some mates over here have bought a campervan and are travelling thru Europe for a few months, so i think ill be jumping in for part of that trip – and might even have to do something similar next year.

I thought when I came over here that it would be a case of meeting completely new people, which of course happens too, but there seems to be loads of friends, old workmates or family who either are visiting or staying over here – its been great fun just setting up shop somewhere new and seeing what happens.

At present I don’t know when ill be back for good, but still enjoying it over here – the potential is to trade for some part of the year here and some part in oz. Really have to see how this trading program works out. For now ive booked a month back to oz over xmas – so hope to see you all then, be warned i may be a colour closer to albino than usual!
